On Sunday, March 2, 2025, the Yasser Arafat Foundation commemorated the birth of Archbishop Hilarion Capucci at Al-Muntada Hall of the Yasser Arafat Museum.
The event began with the Palestinian national anthem, a moment of silence, and the recitation of Al-Fatiha for the late President Yasser Arafat, Archbishop Capucci, and all Palestinian martyrs.
Dr. Ahmed Soboh, Chairman of the Foundation, emphasized that this event started the 4th year of the "In the National Memory—Companions of the Path" program, which highlights key figures and leaders who were close to President Arafat. He paid tribute to Capucci's contributions to Palestine and announced that in 2025, the Foundation would commemorate Capucci along with Samihah Khalil, Farouk Qaddoumi, and Samir Ghosheh.
Dr. Soboh shared that Capucci, named after a saint born in Gaza, studied theology in Jerusalem and became a priest in 1947, returning as Archbishop in 1965. He praised Capucci's Arabism, nationalism, and commitment to the Palestinian cause, including his refusal to cooperate with Israeli occupational authorities after 1967.
Dr. Mai Alkaila, former Palestinian Ambassador to Italy, spoke about Capucci’s strong connection with the Palestinian community in Italy, describing him as a great religious figure who supported the Palestinian revolution. She highlighted his unity and dedication to the Palestinian cause, both in words and action.
Archimandrite Jacques Abed, who studied under Capucci, described the Archbishop's deep love for Palestine, his tireless work for the Palestinian struggle, and his unwavering support for Jerusalem as the eternal capital of Palestine.
Basil Nasrallah, a friend of Capucci from Aleppo, Syria, shared his experiences of Capucci’s fondness for his hometown, noting that the Archbishop always carried mementos from Aleppo during his travels.
The event also featured a documentary film and a photo exhibition celebrating Capucci's life and legacy.
