One of the oldest hospitals in Gaza City is located in the Zeitoun neighborhood in the southern part of the city. Established in 1882 by the Church Missionary Society of the Anglican Church, it is currently managed by the Episcopal Church in Jerusalem.
The hospital provides services through various medical departments with approximately 80 beds. It consists of two buildings: the first is an old heritage building, and the latter was constructed in 2018 to provide supportive diagnostic services.
The hospital faced destruction, theft, and looting during World War I. It was subsequently rebuilt and renamed Al-Ahli Arab Hospital in 1919.
The United Palestinian Appeal in the United States funds the hospital, which has provided services and treated patients and injuries since the First Intifada in 1987 and continues to do so.
During the ongoing Israeli occupation aggression since October 7, 2023, the Israeli occupational Air Force targeted the hospital grounds, which housed thousands of displaced persons due to the war on Gaza. This resulted in the martyrdom of over 500 Palestinians and injuries to more than 600 others, according to initial reports from the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
The Yasser Arafat Foundation presented its 2024 Achievement Award to the healthcare staff in Gaza, recognizing their ongoing humanitarian efforts at Al-Ahli Arab Hospital (Baptist) amid the genocide being waged by the Israeli occupation against our people in Gaza. His Grace Bishop Hossam Naoum accepted the award on October 29, 2024.
