Ramallah Municipality Renovates Yasser Arafat Square with Symbolic Murals

2026-04-22

The central square named after the late Palestinian president Yasser Arafat in downtown Ramallah has undergone a comprehensive renovation and rehabilitation project led by the Ramallah Municipality, bringing new life to one of the city’s most prominent public spaces.

As part of the upgrade, the square has been adorned with three large murals designed by Palestinian artist Mohammad Sabaaneh. The artworks reflect the symbolism of the Palestinian struggle, incorporating a range of iconic figures and themes including the Intifada, farmers, workers, women, and children.

The murals also feature deeply rooted cultural and national elements such as wheat stalks, the Palestinian keffiyeh, masked figures, traditional farming tools, and cactus plants, each carrying historical and social significance. Notably, the sculpted faces within the murals are depicted gazing upward, symbolizing aspiration toward freedom and independence.

Enhancing the visual impact, the surrounding landscape has been planted with flowers in the colors of the Palestinian flag, reinforcing the site’s national identity. The square also features a flagpole depicting a child raising the Palestinian flag, echoing a well-known quote by Arafat: that a young boy or girl would one day raise the flag of Palestine over Jerusalem’s walls, mosques, and churches.

The square was officially named Yasser Arafat Square in 2010.

The foundation extended its appreciation to Ramallah Municipality and all those involved in bringing the project to completion.
