On 10 October 2022 and under the title, The First of bullets and the First of stones, Yasser Arafat Foundation commemorated the 87th birth Anniversary of the national leader and one of the founders of FATH Movement (the prince of Martyrs), Khalil al-Wazir (Abu Jihad) at Al- Muntada Hall at Yasser Arafat Museum.
After playing the Palestinian national anthem, the Master of the ceremonies, Abed Doula welcomed the participants and asked them to observe a minute of silence to recite Al-Fatiha in tribute to the martyr President Yasser Arafat and his companion, the leader Khalil Al-Wazir and all the martyrs of Palestine.
Afterwards, The Foundation screened a film it produced "The Prince of Martyrs. The First of Bullets and the First of Stones," which showed the biography and path of the leader Abu Jihad and his contribution to the Palestinian revolution from inception to martyrdom. The film also highlighted Abu Jihad’s outstanding and great contributions to the national cause in all arenas.
Dr. Ahmed Sobh, Director General of the Yasser Arafat Foundation, explained that this event comes in the course of a larger program entitled “Inside the National Memory, and with this event which marks the birth anniversary of the leader Khalil al-Wazir, the Foundation has, to date, commemorated the birth anniversaries and shed light on the legacy of four comrades of the late President Yasser Arafat.
Dr. Sobh, maintained that the Foundation board will discuss the possibilities of commemorating the legacy of other companions during the next year. He noted that this event came as result of close cooperation with Khalil Al-Wazir Foundation.
Sobh went on saying that since it is highly important to pass the collective national memory from one generation to another, the Foundation will aim at distributing its works and productions to all the schools, libraries and cultural centers in Palestine in close coordination with the Ministry of Education.
Sobh presented some of the humane aspects in Abu jihad’s life: "Abu Jihad is a model of functional resistance of all times with an extraordinary ability to carry out difficult tasks. He has a great role in establishing the "FATH" movement and launching the contemporary Palestinian revolution with his companion,” the leader Yasser Arafat."
On the other hand, Dr. Hanan Al-Wazir, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Khalil Al-Wazir Foundation (daughter of Abu Jihad) and representative of Abu Jihad’s family thanked during her speech Yasser Arafat’s Foundation for organizing this event to commemorate the 87th anniversary. She noted that between her father’s birth and martyrdom there exists a tale of resistance which combines the model of a revolutionary figure with the wisdom of a leader and the noble feelings of a human being. She described him for being status symbol as a leader, a father, a teacher who worked silently, a meticulous and modest person who dedicated his life to the revolution and the revolutionaries and who spread hope all around him despite all difficulties.
Dr. Hanan El Wazeer, further added that her father was an unconventional and out of the box thinker in terms of methods, qualitative missions and comprehensive vision. He believed in the importance of bringing the revolution into every house in Palestine. She underlined the fact that her father endorsed a strategy that will lead to strengthening and building a solid and well-established popular steadfastness basis through supporting various institutions such as universities, civil society, unions, city councils, health, women and youth committees.
On this occasion, Dr. Al Wazeer, reminded that we have to be inspired by the legacy and experience of our leaders including Khalil Al Wazeer’s by going ahead on their foot steps and by defending our people, our land and the future of our children with our heads held high by being proud of our identity and by raising the Palestinian people voice of freedom.
On the other hand, Mahmoud al-Aloul, the deputy head of "FATH", and a member of its central committee described Abu Jihad as an extraordinary man who was born for the revolution. His first and last interest during his selfless life time was the revolution and achieving its objectives.
"You have to make a huge effort to know and understand Khalil Al-Wazir and to notice his performance and tactics on the ground. He was low key; his silence contained great words and big deeds while his compass was always pointed to the field" Aloul said.
Furthermore, Al Aloul recalled some of Abu Jihad’s land marks during the era of the Palestinian Revolution in Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Tunisia and the occupied homeland stressing that armed struggle is the means that will realize the Palestinian goals. In view of that, he established strongholds for the Fedayeen (freedom fighters) as a main exit and as a point of departure because the military edge determines the direction of the compass.
Al Aloul completed his speech by saying that Abu Jihad had an unmistakable insight, he was present in various venues and arenas. Also, he was characterized by his ability to resolve any internal dispute through escalating resistance activities against the occupation.
The event was widely attended by the public, members of the Central Committee of "FATH", the Revolutionary Council and leaders representing various national factions.
This commemoration event, also displayed a photo exhibition portraying the most prominent events in Abu Jihad’s life.
