The author of Bitter Bread, Majid Abu Shara long sought a venue to resist the Israeli occupation. He found a home in Fatah in 1962, joining the movement as both activist and intellectual and a public relations officer.

In 1968, Abu Sharar devoted himself fully to revolutionary media as a Palestinian leader with Yasser Arafat and his comrades. He continued his intellectual and political activism in Jordan and Lebanon until his martyrdom in 1981.  He was assassinated by an Israeli Mossad-planted bomb under his bed at the Hotel Flora in Rome.
Abu Sharar left an enduring intellectual and literary legacy that came to light before and after his assassination.
