United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres visited the Yasser Arafat Memorial in Ramallah, on the 29th of August 2017.
Guterres was accompanied by Foreign Affairs Advisor to President Mahmoud Abbas Dr. Nabil Shaath, the Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the United Nations Dr. Riyad Mansour, and UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Nikolay Mladenov.
Guterres laid a wreath at the mausoleum of Yasser Arafat’s Mausoleum, and then toured the Museum’s exhibits, which present the narrative of the Palestinian National Movement since the early 20th century through the life and work of Yasser Arafat.
In a statement to the media, Guterres said “When visiting this museum, there are of course many emotions and many feelings, but the most important . . . is the feeling of the suffering of the Palestinian people. Since many years, when in different capacities as prime minister of Portugal and as president of an international political organization, I was following very closely the peace process, in its hopes and in its frustrations.”
