Othman Abu Gharbieh (1946- 2016)

Born in Jerusalem in 1946.

In the early 1950s, he and his family relocated to the city of Hebron, where he completed his secondary education; involved in different political activities.

He took part in national events and was arrested and freed on bail for the first time in 1963.

He joined Damascus University - Faculty of Law and was arrested in Hebron prison again in 1966.

In 1967, following the war, he left his university and joined Al-Asifah forces, and participated in several armed patrols.

In 1968, he joined the Military College in Nanjing, People's Republic of China, and graduated in 1969, becoming a first lieutenant.

After graduating, he was appointed Officer of the General Command of the Al-Asifah  Forces, assistant commander of the "201 Brigade" in Jerash and Al Aghwar regions, and political commissar in the sector.

In the fall of 1969, he led the battles of Kafr Qouq and Aiha, the first of its kind, with the Lebanese army forces near the Lebanese-Syrian border.

He established the Military Cadres School for Al-Asifah Forces and became its commander, then Deputy General Political Commissar.

He was also a member of the National Liberation Movements Committee with the martyr Abu Jihad.

Took different Palestinian military tasks between 1967 and 1971 in Jordan.

He was assigned by FATH on various military missions during the Black September events.

He became a member of the command of the forces in the forests of "Diben" with the martyr Abu Jihad in 1971, the martyr Kamal Adwan and brother Sakhr Abu Nizar participated in this command.

He was entrusted with the leadership of the Jordanian arena, and he was able to direct the political work in the last stages of his presence.

He left Jordan immediately after the fall of Ajloun and the martyrdom of Commander Abu Ali Iyad.

After leaving Jordan, he participated in political missions, including one to the People's Republic of Yemen, where he was charged with attempting to obtain a military fulcrum in Bab al-Mandab, and this mission was the catalyst for the People's Republic of Yemen's relations with "FATH" movement to enter an important new phase.

After the reformation of the political direction in 1972, he continued to assume his duties as commander of the Cadres School and as Deputy General Political Commissioner.

He participated in many battles, assumed the leadership of the Denniyeh region, and was a member of the North Military Command in the Tripoli region. He was able to control the town of “Sir” and the “Dennie” region and secured the road to Hermel and the outskirts of Bekaa Valley.

He assumed leadership duties in the central sector south of the city of Tyre.

In 1973, he participated in the October War, in southern Lebanon and on the "Ruwaisat Al-Alam" then moved to the Golan front.

He was captured during this war as part of a combat group by the Jordanian forces while heading through the Jordanian territories to strike the supply lines of the occupation army in "Samakh".

He returned to take up his duties again in the School of Cadres.

He entered the Military Academy "Vestrel" in the USSR and graduated in 1976. He returned to take over the duties during the Lebanese war.

He was captured in the Mediterranean off Sidon by the naval occupation forces, the isolationist forces, and the Lebanese army, he was imprisoned and his group by the Lebanese Army.

During his imprisonment, he managed a unique fight that resulted in the exchange of captives when his companions in the south, by command of Commander Said Musa "Abu Musa," fought a special battle, the battle of Al-Aishiya, to exchange him and his friends.

Upon the change in the political direction, he was transferred to the Mobilization and Organization Office in 1977.

• He returned to his positions in the Cadres School and to perform combat missions, especially when the Litani invaded in 1978.

He assumed various organizational tasks and became responsible for European and Asian sectors and then head of the Organization Department.

He faced different battles with Zionist extremist organizations, in which many martyrs fell, and survived an assassination attempt in Istanbul skillfully.

He was elected at the Fourth General Conference in 1980 as a member of the Revolutionary Council and became Deputy Commissioner of Mobilization and Organization.

He participated in formations and combat missions in the Bekaa during the 1982 invasion and supervised the volunteers from the organizational regions.

• He was involved in several militaries, organizational and political activities, supervised hundreds of conferences, and oversaw the movement's global organization.

• He formulated the organizational theory of the movement and wrote much of its literature and circulars.

He lead the Syrian front after the leadership moved to Tunisia following the split. He led the battles of Damascus directly.

In late 1983, he moved to Tunisia and was appointed Deputy Commissioner for Mobilization and Organization. He took part in the most demanding organizing activities, such as monitoring conferences, such as those held in Kuwait and Yemen.

He also became a member of the Palestinian National Council in 1984.

He participated in political and national tasks and attended many national and international conferences.

Participated as an active member of the intellectual mobilization committee in all stages of its work.

He participated in the Preparatory Committee and the Fifth General Conference and was a candidate for the Central Committee of the Conference, the Revolutionary Council, and the Central Committee.

He took a political stand against Oslo in conjunction with entering the homeland. Then become an efficient member of the Palestinian Central Council.

He entered Palestine and became an assistant to the commander-in-chief for political and national guidance, a general political commissar, and a member of the Supreme Military Council of the National Authority.

He undertook various responsibilities within the scope of his activity, raised the slogan "human beings first," and committed to the full extent of Palestinian national rights, the line of a fight on this path, and the line of ensuring national readiness.

He was chosen as Chairman of the Palestinian National Council's Committee on Foreign Contacts and Parliamentary Affairs, and he participated and accepted parliamentary responsibilities in relations with friendly parliaments.

In addition to being a deputy commissioner for mobilization and organization, he became a member of the Supreme Emergency Committee, the Higher Supervisory Committee, and the commissioner for the movement's military organization.

He participated in the various tasks and made a special effort to nurture and activate Palestinian creativity and culture.

He participated in drawing political and militant trends, especially for the glorious Intifada, and was a member of the framework of the national and Islamic forces.

In 2003 he became Vice President of Yasser Arafat / Commander in Chief for Political and National Orientation Affairs, General Political Commissioner.

In early 2005, he was elected by the Fateh Revolutionary Council as head of the Membership Committee (sub-committee of the Conference Preparation Committee) at its 6th conference.

Included in the military ranks to the rank of major general.

He participated in the 2006 Legislative Council elections for the Jerusalem district and retired by law while holding the rank of major general.

He was named commissioner of the Military Movement Office, and was the first commissioner of this office, as he attended the meetings of the Central Committee.

In 2008 he became the general commissioner of the popular organizations in the PLO and the "FATH" movement.

He headed the Preparatory Committee for the National People's Congress for Jerusalem and was elected Secretary-General of the conference in 2008.

He was elected head of the Sixth General Conference of FATH on 4/8/2009.

He was elected as a member of the Central Committee of FATH movement.

He returned and received the portfolio of the Military Kinetic Office, Security Affairs, and Information in the Central Committee.

He also received the portfolio of the General Commissioner for Jerusalem Affairs in the movement in addition to his duties.

He was named a member of the Higher National Committee for Jerusalem, headed by the Chairman of the PLO Executive Committee.

Appointed head of the National Committee for Jerusalem as the permanent capital of Arab culture on 21/5/2011.

He conducted several national and international visits and formal meetings, whether as Chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee in the National Assembly or as Secretary-General of the National People's Congress of Jerusalem.

He founded and supervised the “Masharef Maqdiseah” magazine issued by the National Committee for Jerusalem, the permanent capital of Arab culture.

He passed away on the 18th of April 2016 while undergoing a heart transplant in a hospital in India.
